YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE
“…Walk on,
through the wind.
Walk on,
through the rain.
Though your dreams
be tossed & blown.
Walk on,
walk on
with
hope in your heart
& you’ll never walk alone...”
Audiences were introduced to the song "You'll Never Walk Alone" in the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical "Carousel". It premiered on Broadway in 1945.
Many recording artists covered the song over subsequent decades, including Doris Day, Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong. In 1963, Gerry & The Pacemakers released the most famous version of the song. The Liverpudlian group's remake topped the British chart for a month. It has since been adopted as the Liverpool Football Club's anthem.
In 1985, when a fire at a Bradford City stadium claimed the lives of 56 spectators, Gerry Marsden (of Gerry & The Pacemakers) assembled numerous celebrities to record a charity disc as a response to the tragedy. Released under the moniker The Crowd, this new interpretation of "You'll Never Walk Alone" reached #1 in the UK.
Oscar Hammerstein II's lyrics are encouraging and empowering. The power of the song's verses still resonate to this day.
As
new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be added to a
