BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG…
These songs are well known
but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with
prior versions of the same song.
The Gambler
The country music classic "The Gambler" is Kenny Rogers' signature song. It spawned a series of telemovies involving "The Gambler", Brady Hawkes. Rogers portrayed the title role.
He released the single in 1978. It topped the US Country Chart and peaked at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100. The disc charted in Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. But this version of the Grammy Award-winning track was not the original.
The song was penned by Don Schiltz (below) in 1976. He recorded it and cover versions followed. These were cut by Bobby Bare and Johnny Cash prior to Rogers' remake.
