Elvis tackles the brutality of the cycle of life in the slums on his smash hit "In The Ghetto". For a national icon such as Presley to deal with such a provocative song was significant.
Released in 1969, the track was written by aspiring musician Mac Davis. His verses begin with the birth of an infant. Its mother is struggling financially. The child grows up hungry and cannot resist the only choice available to him: stealing. He obtains a gun and steals a car. He is shot dead. While this life is extinguished, elsewhere, another child is born into poverty in the same city. The cycle continues.
