THE BEST CHRISTMAS
SONGS EVER!
*1*
DO THEY KNOW IT’S CHRISTMAS?
Band Aid
No song encapsulates the true spirit of Christmas better than “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” Celebrated as a time for giving, this charity recording reminds us all that not every citizen of this planet is having a festive time. Bob Geldof was moved by images of the desperate situation in Ethiopia. He gathered various performers to participate on a disc to raise funds to help make a difference.
Billed as Band Aid, this special cohort consisted of Bono, Paul Weller, Boy George, Duran Duran, Wham!, Bananarama, Sting, Paul Young, Phil Collins, Jody Watley, Status Quo and Ultravox. The song was written by Geldof and Midge Ure (from the latter group).
Released prior to Christmas 1984, the single topped the charts in the UK, Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Since 1984, different configurations of Band Aid have been assembled to record new versions of the song. The original remains the definitive version. More importantly, the success of the disc helped feed many famine-affected Africans. It spawned an American response in “We Are The World” and the legendary 1985 Live Aid event.
