George Michael was just 21 when he penned the modern seasonal classic “Last Christmas”. Inspiration came to him while he and fellow Wham! Member Andrew Ridgeley were watching football at Michael’s parents’ residence. Unleashed in 1984, it peaked at #2 in the UK. The disc was kept out of the #1 position by Band Aid’s “Do They Know it’s Christmas?”. It reached the top in Scandinavia. Elsewhere, the single made the Top 3 in various European countries, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Ever since, the single has been re-issued and regularly returns to the Top 3 around Christmas time (as has been the case in 2020).
