THE BEST CHRISTMAS
SONGS EVER!
*6*
DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR?
Whitney Houston
“Do You Hear What I Hear” is often inaccurately interpreted as a religious song, but its lyrics intended to convey an anti-war message. It was written by married couple Noël Regney and Gloria Shayne in 1962, while the world feared the worst during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
The pair’s key message was about peace. Fortunately, US President John F. Kennedy stared down the Russian threat and a global conflict was avoided. When Bing Crosby recorded his version of the song, it sold over a million copies. It has since been recorded by artists ranging from Johnny Cash, The Carpenters, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Idina Menzel and Whitney Houston. The latter’s cover was recorded for the 1987 Special Olympics charity album ‘A Very Special Christmas’.
