100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1997
💥95 Candle In The Wind 1997
Elton John
History has given us moments that are forever etched in our memory. We always remember where we were when events such as the 9/11 Terror Attacks or the John F. Kennedy and John Lennon assassinations shocked the globe. The same is true of the tragic car crash that claimed the life of Princess Diana on August 31, 1997. As the planet dealt with the shock news, grief swept over admirers of one of the world’s most recognizable figures. Her marriage to Prince Charles had resembled a soap opera or a fairy tale that became a nightmare. Public sympathy overwhelmingly sided with Diana. Her funeral was held on September 6. Elton John, one of her closest friends, performed at the service. The planet watched as his new version of “Candle In The Wind” summed up its immense sorrow. Most viewers wept as John paid tribute to the “People’s Princess”. The song had originally been about film legend Marilyn Monroe and included on the 1973 album ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’. As had been the case with the original, the new lyrics were penned by Bernie Taupin. A week later, the new version was issued as a single. Produced by George Martin, the disc was greeted by unprecedented worldwide demand. It soon occupied pole position on charts everywhere, including America, Britain, Europe, Canada, Japan and Australia. The charity disc became the fastest selling single in British history. It is the world’s official best-selling single of all time (definitive data does not exist for its only rival to the claim: Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas”). John proved that a song could bring the planet together to grieve and heal with the record-breaking success of “Candle In The Wind 1997”. The track was released as a double A-side with “Something About The Way You Look Tonight”.
