💥91 Smells Like Teen Spirit

Nirvana

While the mainstream was slowly accepting hip hop, rock purists craved something new that embodied the thrill of raw rock ‘n’ roll. Nirvana did not invent grunge, but the group without doubt made sure the planet became aware of the fledgling genre. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was the opening track on the watershed ‘Nevermind’ album. Nirvana channelled The Pixies as the band constructed the track. The intro evokes the guitar riff from Boston’s “More Than A Feeling”. Then, Dave Grohl kicks in, bashing his drum kit. Kurt Cobain’s vocal may make the lyrics indecipherable, but the message was understood by every youth that bothered to listen. Bassist Krist Novoselic contributed in the creation of the new anthem. The band co-produced the track with Butch Vig (from the group Garbage). Suddenly, grunge was part of popular culture. More tracks became radio staples: “Lithium”, “Come As You Are” and “All Apologies”; the latter from follow-up LP ‘In Utero’. Nirvana was no smooth ride. Cobain had his demons as well as musical talent. His tragic death in 1994 put an end to the group. Grunge was popularized by contemporaries of Nirvana, including Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots and Silverchair. Grohl later re-emerged with a new band: Foo Fighters.
