100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

1986

💥82 Walk This Way

Run-D.M.C.

featuring Steven Tyler & Joe Perry

Run-DMC Walk This Way.jpgRap was still in the fringes, enthusiastically embraced by urban fans, but still meeting resistance from the rock and pop audience. Run-D.M.C. had been expanding its reach over two albums, fusing rap with heavy metal tracks. This ground-breaking approach was soon adopted by other rap acts. Third album ‘Raising Hell’ brought Rick Rubin in as co-producer with his Def Jam label partner Russell Simmons. The former loved rap, hard rock and heavy metal. Rubin conceived the idea of bringing the genres together on a remake of “Walk This Way”. The original version had been released in 1975 by the group Aerosmith. Lead singer Steven Tyler had penned it with guitarist Joe Perry. Rubin invited the pair to contribute on the rap makeover. They agreed. Run-D.M.C.’s cover version appealed to both rap and rock fans. “Walk This Way” became the first rap song to crack the US Top 10. The single charted high in Britain, Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Its success was no novelty. Parent LP ‘Raising Hell’ cracked the US Top 10 Albums Chart. Run-D.M.C. were the leading exponents of rap, as the genre continued evolving and infiltrating the mainstream.
