100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1991
💥89 Enter Sandman
Metallica
Metallica re-invigorated metal in 1991. During the 1980s, heavy metal had been emasculated. Hair metal bands, such as Warrant, Poison, Whitesnake, Skid Row and Ratt, had flourished. Metallica had been gradually expanding its fan base during the decade with albums like 'Master Of Puppets' and tracks such as '"One". As the group approached its first album for the 1990s, the members shifted gear. Lengthy tracks were out. The next album would contain songs that were straight to the point. This project would be an eponymous LP (aka ‘The Black Album’). With the single “Enter Sandman”, lifted off the album, Metallica conceived the blueprint for metal’s future. The thrash that had been a feature on previous records was replaced by a more pop sound. The new approach paid off: resulting in sales that exceeded 7,000,000 copies in America; where the LP reached #1. Kirk Hammett kicks off the song with his unforgettable guitar riff. Drummer Lars Ulrich helped him extend the intro. The initial concept for “Enter Sandman” was presented to the band by James Hetfield. It started as a song about a baby dying in its crib. Producer Bob Rock and Ulrich intervened and Hetfield changed the lyrics. The song's theme deals with nightmares. Its success saw Metallica attract a wider audience and earn the respect of music critics; a rarity for a metal group. In later years, the band waged a protracted legal dispute with the file-sharing service Napster. This was another key event in rock music history; and a reflection of how the industry was changing.
