Faith No More

Faith No More’s “Epic” was radically different from what music fans had heard before. It unintentionally defied the group’s convention by courting the mainstream. At the time, the band had ousted lead vocalist Chuck Mosley. Mike Patton was recruited as his replacement. His addition to the line-up saw the group’s new song lyrics take on a different approach. Just what the song is about eluded fans, but Patton later explained it was about sexual frustration and masturbation. “Epic” was a genre-bending track which included elements of heavy metal, rap, classical and funk. The fusion was seamless. It served as a preview of the hybrid songs that would become a feature of 90s music. The music video left an impression too: with the controversial closing scene depicting a dying fish flopping about out of water. “Epic” laid the foundation for nu metal. In America, the single became an unlikely Top 10 hit. Faith No More struggled to maintain the momentum of its hit single. It is also likely that the banddeliberately resisted the temptation of commercial pop success. Regardless, “Epic” encouraged other acts to mix genres together in creative new ways.
