De La Soul

The arrival of ‘3 Feel High And Rising’ was a landmark moment in hip hop history. Here was an album that contained humour and brought together samples from a wide array of genres. These included funk, disco, pop, jazz and psychedelia. The trio proved that hip hop could be fun and shifted the focus away from the streets. On the album, one track dared to be positive: “Say No Go”. This song delivered an anti- hard drug message. It was built around a sample of the Hall & Oates 1981 hit “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)”. Until now, hip hop courted controversy, with largely violent themes. De La Soul’s message was different. It had a neo-hippie philosophy, announcing the emergence of “the D.A.I.S.Y. age” (Da Inner Sound, Y’all). By doing so, the trio was a lighter alternative to hardcore rap acts such as Public Enemy and N.W.A. De La Soul opened the floodgates for acts that followed like Beck, Arrested Development, US3 and The Roots.
