100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1984
💥80 Do They Know It’s Christmas?
Band Aid
Bob Geldof, lead singer of The Boomtown Rats, was moved by images he saw on television of the famine ravaging Ethiopia. He was so affected that he decided to do something to help. Various superstars of the British music industry were invited to participate as a supergroup that became known as Band Aid. Geldof co-wrote “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” with Midge Ure of the group Ultravox. The charity disc featured popular artists and groups such as U2, Paul Weller, Sting, George Michael, Duran, Duran, Boy George, Bananarama, Status Quo, Spandau Ballet and Phil Collins among the contributors. It was released in time for Christmas 1984. The disc entered the UK chart at #1 and became that country’s best-selling single of all-time; a record it held until 1997. Across Europe, in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the single topped the charts. Its sales helped raise millions to direct towards the crisis in Africa. Other star-studded collaborations flourished, the most famous being U.S.A. For Africa’s “We Are The World”. The song was penned by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. America’s response featured music legends such as Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Dionne Warwick and Tina Turner. The 2 singles led to the Live Aid Concerts in July of 1985. This event brought the globe together in an unprecedented way. New versions of Band Aid have re-recorded “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” in 1989, 2004 and 2014. Other causes have used the same concept to raise funds and awareness.
