100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1992
💥92 Killing In The Name
Rage Against The Machine
Rage Against The Machine concocted a new sound by merging heavy metal with rap. Two fans of the two genres within the band- guitarist Tom Morello (metal) and lyricist Zach de la Rocha (rap)- fused them with a fierce energy. The group’s self-titled debut album was unleashed in 1992. “Killing In The Name” was its lead single and remains the band’s signature track. This is for good reason. For the marginalized, it was a calling card. To a casual listener, this was vulgarity and noise. Disenfranchised youths, on the other hand, related to its message. Morello stumbled upon the classic riff while teaching guitar to a student. While the group was in the studio working on its debut LP, they were affected by the Rodney King trial. The African- American was savagely beaten up by L.A. police officers. Those responsible were acquitted. Rioting erupted. Amidst all of the conflict, RATM constructed its anthem of rebellion. The band, as its name suggests, was already anti-establishment. “Killing In The Name” warned that some authorities like the police were akin to the Ku Klux Klan. What really resonated with outraged youth was its mantra: “fuck you I won’t do what you tell me”. It was misunderstood by conservative forces and banned by US radio, but those lyrics were a valuable lesson. What RATM created inspired groups such as Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Incubus, Korn, Slipknot and System Of A Down.
