100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1987
💥83 Pump Up The Volume
M/A/R/R/S
When Ivo Watts-Russell, the head of the 4AD label, brought together 2 of the acts on its roster – A.R. Kane and Colourbox- the result was a sonic revolution. Relations between the pair were far from cordial and they worked separately. The former was mostly responsible for one of the single’s double A-sides: “Anitina”, which was overshadowed by Colourbox’s “Pump Up The Volume”. The latter track mixed sampling with older recordings and underground dance music. Fundamental to the record’s impact were the samples of Ofra Haza’s “Im Nin’ Alu” and Eric B & Rakim’s “Paid In Full”. Renowned mixer Chris “C.J.” Mackintosh and DJ Dave Dorrell provided the scratching effects. The disc was released under the M/A/R/R/S moniker. “Pump Up The Volume” brought together hip-hop with dance in a way that had never been tried as effectively. Its success helped raise the status of DJs, mixers and producers as creators of music. The British track reached #1 in the UK and went on to top the charts in Canada, parts of Europe and New Zealand. M/A/R/R/S splintered soon after, but its role in the evolution of dance and hip-hop remains undeniable.
