The official Bond films are associated with Eon Productions. Years earlier, producer Kevin McClory was involved in the development of the plot for a 007 film with Bond creator Ian Fleming and writer Jack Whittingham. The project they were working on was an early incarnation of ‘Thunderball’. Their plot was discarded but then used for a Fleming Bond novel. No credit was given to his 2 collaborators. McClory litigated and his copyright claim was successful. He has been retrospectively given credit for his input on the ‘Thunderball’ movie. Another term of the resolution was the right to create a film of their earlier plot after a decade.
By the time work began on the alternative plot, Sean Connery had ceased starring in Bond films. Roger Moore had taken over as the world’s favourite spy. McClory sought out the original Bond actor to work as a consultant. Connery, who after the 1971 Bond adventure ‘Diamonds Are Forever’, had vowed to “never again” portray 007, was eventually persuaded to reprise the role. Hence the new film’s title.
Singer Lani Hall had been married to Herb Alpert for a decade by the time ‘Never Say Never Again’ premiered. It is noteworthy that both performed music for non-Eon Bond films. Hall’s song was composed by Michel Legrand with lyrics by married couple Alan and Marilyn Bergman. In 1983, the Eon-approved Bond film ‘Octopussy’ also hit cinema screens.
