THE GREATEST SONGS
MCMLXXXII
1982 was dominated by world events such as The Falklands War between Argentina and Great Britain; Michael Jackson released ‘Thriller’; Leonid Brezhnev died as did: Ingrid Bergman, Princess Grace (Kelly) and John Belushi; Prince William’s birth placed him second in line to inherit Queen Elizabeth II’s throne; “Cats” opened on Broadway. Cinemagoers turned the films ‘E.T.’ ‘Tootsie’ and ‘Gandhi’ into box office hits. Among the year’s new books were ‘Schindler’s List’ and ‘The Color Purple’. “Cheers” and “Family Ties” premiered on US television.
Here are 200 songs representing the best music released during that year.
1
BILLIE JEAN
Michael Jackson
In 1982, Michael Jackson was ubiquitous. Of all the tracks on his mega-successful ‘Thriller’ album, “Billie Jean” was the one that propelled his career to new heights. It remains the singer’s finest moment on record. The single was an international hit and built on the groundwork achieved on predecessor ‘Off The Wall’, also produced by Quincy Jones.
2
SEXUAL HEALING
Marvin Gaye
After providing Motown with many groundbreaking songs in the 1960s and ‘70s, Marvin Gaye was in a creative slump. He had left the label and relocated to Ostend, in Belgium. Music journalist David Ritz met Gaye for an interview. Discovering the singer’s porn collection, he suggested Gaye needed “sexual healing”. The seed for a new song had been planted. Gate recorded a new album while in Belgium, entitled ‘Midnight Love’. It would include the comeback hit “Sexual Healing” on his new label: Columbia. The resurgence resulted in a 10-week reign atop the US Soul Chart and a worldwide pop smash.
3
THE DAY BEFORE YOU CAME
ABBA
When ABBA gathered in the studio to record “The Day Before You Came”, they had no idea this would be the last song they would cut as a group for almost 40 years. Bjorn Ulvaeus demonstrates his evolution as a skilled lyricist on this track. Benny Andersson applied his studio wizardry on this unique song which finds Agnetha Fältskog delivering a lead vocal as only she can. This was an apt swansong. Fortunately, ABBA did re-unite and release a new album in 2021.
4
1999
Prince
Even before discussion around Y2K, the arrival of the year 2000 was expected to bring global destruction. Prince accepted this inevitability and suggested we all party while we still can. “1999” served as the title track for his fifth studio album. The LP became his first to reach the US Top 10.
5
I’M SO EXCITED
Pointer Sisters
The Pointer Sisters never did get enough credit for their dexterity switching from one genre to another across the decades. They scored success with country, rock, soul, pop and dance songs. The siblings co-wrote “I’m So Excited” with Trevor Lawrence. Richard Perry produced the track. It fared well on some charts (including Australia) when first released in 1982, but was re-issued 2 years later and became a major hit single.
6
AFRICA
Toto
The members of Toto had been in-demand session musicians, (working with acts such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, Michael Jackson and George Benson) before coming together as a group in 1978. In 1982, the band reached its peak, with singles such as “Africa”, from the very successful album ‘Toto IV’. The group accumulated 5 Grammy Awards for its efforts.
7
BEAT IT
Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson dominated the musical pantheon in 1982 with ‘Thriller’ and its string of hit singles. “Beat It” was the third single lifted off what would break records on its way to becoming the best-selling album of all-time. Eddie Van Halen heightened the thrill with his unforgettable guitar work.
8
STATE OF INDEPENDENCE
Donna Summer
The original version of “State Of Independence” was recorded by its composers Jon Anderson and Vangelis for the duo’s 1981 album ‘The Friends Of Mr. Cairo’. When it was decided that Donna Summer would cover the song, it was infused with more soul and a funky beat courtesy of renowned producer Quincy Jones. He assembled an all-star choir to perform on the remake; including Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Dionne Warwick, Lionel Richie, James Ingram, Michael McDonald and Christopher Cross. Jones would use this experience when producing “We Are The World” with even more musical greats.
9
LITTLE RED CORVETTE
Prince
“Little Red Corvette” was Prince’s first Top 10 single in America. Oozing sex, this song helped consolidate the singer’s rising profile.
10
THRILLER
Michael Jackson
Exactly 10 years after scoring his first #1 as a solo artist with “Ben”, Michael Jackson established himself as one of popular music’s greatest artists. “Thriller” was the title track from his behemoth album. The song will remain timeless because of its highly influential music video.
