GREATEST DRUMMERS
It’s hard to imagine any song with a driving beat without a drum kit powering the overall sound. This list pays tribute to the drummers whose work has had the greatest impact and influence on rock and pop music.

JIM GORDON
Jim Gordon earned respect as a session player and achieved immortality as the drummer on the epic rock staple ”Layla” by Derek & The Dominos. Sadly, despite his obvious talent, mental health issues led to him murdering his mother and being incarcerated.

SHEILA E.
Sheila Escovedo began as a protégé of Prince before establishing her own reputation as a talented drummer and enjoying solo hits that included “The Glamorous Life”.

JIM KELTNER
You have most likely heard Jim Keltner’s drumming on numerous well-known recordings, including albums by John Lennon, George Harrison, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, Ringo Starr, Rolling Stones, Roy Orbison, Carly Simon and The Traveling Wilburys. Among his best work is the drumming on “Josie” from Steely Dan’s ‘Aja’ LP.
/27\
DAVE GROHL
His drumming is the engine room for Nirvana’s groundbreaking “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. Lead singer Kurt Cobain’s death led to the tragic end of that grunge band. Grohl switched instruments and formed a new group: The Foo Fighters.

D.J. FONTANA
When D.J. Fontana played drums for Elvis Presley, he was breaking new ground. There was no blueprint to emulate. Fontana laid it out for those that followed him in the early years of rock ‘n’ roll music. He was there, pounding away on Elvis’ classic hits such as “Jailhouse Rock”, “Hound Dog”, “Teddy Bear”, “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Blue Suede Shoes”.
