TONY THOMPSON
As drummer for the group Chic, Tony Thompson helped create the sound of disco and hip hop. His drumming is a key feature of the countless samples of that group’s catalogue that have been recycled on new tracks (including Sugarhill Gang’s “Rappers Delight”). As part of the Chic organization, Thompson played on numerous projects helmed by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, including the #1s: “Le Freak” and “Good Times” (Chic), “Like A Virgin” (Madonna), “Let’s Dance” (David Bowie) and “Upside Down” (Diana Ross). He also later joined as drummer for The Power Station which featured Robert Palmer and some members of Duran Duran, scoring the smash “Some Like It Hot”. For some time, Thompson was seriously considered as a replacement for the deceased John Bonham in Led Zeppelin.
