 GREATEST DRUMMERS

It’s hard to imagine any song with a driving beat without a drum kit powering the overall sound. This list pays tribute to the drummers whose work has had the greatest impact and influence on rock and pop music.

BUDDY RICH

His drumming no doubt influenced many, even though his work was mostly concentrated in jazz circles, but Buddy Rich is considered one of the key musicians. Just listen to his rendition of “Birdland” and witness his prowess. He is widely regarded as the best among jazz drummers.

CLYDE STUBBLEFIELD

Arguably the most sampled drummer, Clyde Stubblefield was featured prominently on many watershed James Brown recordings. Among the most significant are: “Cold Sweat”, “Say It Loud (I’m Black And I’m Proud)”, “Mother Popcorn” and “Funky Drummer”. Stubblefield injected the beat on those influential funk tracks.

EARL YOUNG

Philly Soul served as a fundamental bridge between soul music and disco. Earl Young drummed on many influential lush recordings as part of MFSB, the house band at Gamble & Huff’s label Philadelphia International. He performed on tracks by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, The O’Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, Barbara Mason, The Three Degrees and The Village People.
