ALL THE EUROVISION COUNTRIES: (19). More: tomorrow.
Caffè ☕️Lattè looks back on:
ALL THE
EUROVISION
COUNTRIES
The Eurovision Song Contest was first held in 1956. Back then, only 7 countries participated. In the decades since, dozens of other nations have joined the ESC family. As Europe changed, countries faded into history as new countries and new names emerged. Eurovision itself has expanded beyond the European continent; to Africa, the Middle East and the Southern Hemisphere.
Our spotlight looks back on every country that has competed – in chronological order.
1971
After the controversy of the 1969 Contest (when 4 countries tied for first place), only 12 nations competed the following year. Norway, Sweden, Finland, Portugal and Austria withdrew which only confirmed the belief that Eurovision was facing extinction. The 1970 Contest helped salvage the situation. All of the countries that had withdrawn the previous year returned. A new country joined the fold, bringing the number of participants back to eighteen.

MALTA
Portugal’s recent Eurovision triumph means that Malta now holds the dubious distinction of participating for the most years without achieving a single win. The country has finished second twice. Chiara has represented Malta thrice, ending in third place and as the runner-up with “The One That I Love” and “Angel” respectively.
Malta withdrew from the Contest after its 1975 participation, but returned in 1991. It has competed every year since then, bringing its total to 37 times. In 2024, Malta will be performing in Semi-Final 2 with the entry “Loop”.
