ALL THE EUROVISION COUNTRIES: (20). More: tomorrow.
Caffè ☕️Lattè looks back on:
ALL THE
EUROVISION
COUNTRIES
The Eurovision Song Contest was first held in 1956. Back then, only 7 countries participated. In the decades since, dozens of other nations have joined the ESC family. As Europe changed, countries faded into history as new countries and new names emerged. Eurovision itself has expanded beyond the European continent; to Africa, the Middle East and the Southern Hemisphere.
Our spotlight looks back on every country that has competed – in chronological order.
1973
Eurovision went beyond the European mainland in 1973, expanding to now include Israel. This was a controversial decision. Despite not being on the continent, Israel was permitted to participate because its broadcaster was a member of the EBU.
XX
ISRAEL
Israel’s debut at Eurovision resulted in two consecutive Top 10 placings. Only a few years later, the country won for the first time in 1978 and claimed back-to-back victories, winning again in 1979. Dana International became the first trans performer to win the Contest in 1998 with “Diva”. Netta delivered a fourth (and the most recent) Israeli victory in 2018 with “Toy”.
Israel has participated 47 times. Its 2024 entry will be performed by Eden Golan, who will be hoping to progress from Semi-Final 2 to the Grand Final in Malmö, Sweden on Saturday May 11.
