Dusty Springfield was absent from the UK Top 10 after 1968 until 1987 when she teamed with The Pet Shop Boys for the hit single "What Have I Done To Deserve This?". The synth-pop duo helped keep her on the UK charts with later singles such as "In Private". Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe wrote the song and co-produced the track with Julian Mendelsohn.
