BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG…
These songs are well known
but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with
prior versions of the same song.
Seasons In The Sun
Canadian artist Terry Jacks enjoyed a worldwide smash hit with the teary ballad "Seasons In The Sun". In 1973, his single was issued and went on to reach #1 in America, Britain, Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
The hit was originally a French song entitled "Le Moribond". Its title translates as "the dying man". Celebrated Belgian singer / songwriter Jacques Brel penned the original version. The song was included on his 1961 album 'Marieke'. American Rod McKuen adapted the song for an English-speaking audience.
Irish boyband Westlife recorded a remake of the song that reached #1 on the British chart in late 1999. It was issued as a double A-side with the group's cover of the ABBA song "I Have A Dream".
