#460 I CAN'T GO FOR THAT (NO CAN DO) Hall & Oates
The duo consisting of Daryl Hall and John Oates first met up in 1967 while they were both studying at the same university. At the time, Philadelphia was the epicentre of the lush soul productions that was christened the "Phillie Sound". Hall had worked on various sessions for its principal architects Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. When Hall and Oates met, they discovered they shared musical preferences and began performing together. They parted ways soon after, but regrouped in 1969 and started writing and performing as a duo. Tommy Mottola became their manager. The duo signed with Atlantic and, later, with RCA. On the new label, Hall & Oates refined their sound: a blend of soul and pop with elements of folk and rock. This fusion spawned their 1st hit singles: "Sara Smile", She's Gone" and their 1977 US #1 "Rich Girl".
Hall & Oates' blue-eyed soul gained greater popularity as the 1980s began. In 1982, the duo scored its 4th American #1 with "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)". The hit's creation came about spontaneously. A chorus left over from the recording of their 1980 LP 'Voices' was being played by Hall on the synthesizer. At the time, the duo was in the studio completing their follow-up album 'Private Eyes'. The song developed with contributions from the duo and Sara Allen. The sax solo by Charlie DeChant was recorded later. Hall & Oates produced the track.
Along with climbing to the top on the American Pop, R&B and Dance charts, (a rarity at the time for white acts) "I Can't Go For That" also reached #2 in Canada and 8 in Britain. On the Australian Top 40, the single peaked at #13.
This
is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I
cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks.
Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have
universal appeal.
They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal
choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a
better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
2
new songs are added each day (every 12 hours) with a mid-week bonus
every Wednesday.
