NEW RELEASE OF THE MONTH
FEBRUARY 2014
LISA STANSFIELDSEVEN
Lisa Stansfield returns to the sound that made her a star on her new CD. Upon hearing 'Seven', you could be forgiven for thinking it is still 1990. That's not to say that this collection sounds dated. It's a welcome throwback to the acid jazz/ dance elements that are still aurally pleasing with Stansfield's competent vocal delivery firmly in the spotlight.
The album opens with "Can't Dance": a perfect choice to set up the new album. The retro feel of this track immediately announces Stansfield is back, after an 8-year absence. "Why" has elements of jazz set in a modern context. "So Be It" is a lush production that highlights Stansfield's vocal range. With "Stupid Heart", she again combines the past with a contemporary approach. This could have been recorded by the likes of Sam Brown or Duffy and sees Stansfield adopt a different vocal attitude. "The Crown" takes our singer down a more R&B direction musically with lyrics about loving the wrong man. By the time you get to "Picket Fence", you are so happy to have Stansfield back as you chill with the soft grooves.  "The Rain" uses imagery in its lyrics with a gorgeous arrangement that is the kind she excels in; a true highlight on the new album."Conversation" slows down and delivers a message of optimism. The beat rises again with toe-tapper "Carry On"; another strong stand-out track. The album closes with "Love Can". This is a very enjoyable new album from a talented vocalist.
