#494 THEME FROM 'THE DEEP' (DOWN, DEEP INSIDE) Donna Summer
'The Deep' was a film released in 1977 starring Robert Shaw, Nick Nolte and Jacqueline Bisset. The title song was co-written by John Barry, who was chiefly responsible for the motion picture's soundtrack, and Donna Summer. At the time, the latter was 1 of the most popular recording acts and the theme was very similar to her 1975 breakthrough disco hit "Love To Love You Baby". Barry was renowned for his involvement in the Bond franchise. Beginning with 'Dr No', Barry composed numerous Bond title songs. He collected an Academy Award in 1966 for co-writing "Born Free" from the film of the same name (with Don Black).
The album version of "The Deep" ran for 6 minutes. The track was produced by Barry. Released as a double A-side single in the USA, it reached #3 on the Disco Chart there. The single was issued in other territories with an instrumental version of the title song on its flip side. In Britain, the disc peaked at #5.
"Down, Deep Inside" was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Original Song in 1977, alongside "How Deep Is Your Love" (Bee Gees), "New York! New York!" (Liza Minnelli) and "Nobody Does It Better" (Carly Simon). All of them lost out to "You Light Up My Life". Summer only needed to wait a year, emerging victorious in 1978 with a win in the same category (and an Oscar!) for "Last Dance" from the film 'Thank God It's Friday'.
This
is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I
cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks.
Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have
universal appeal.
They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal
choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a
better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
2
new songs are added each day (every 12 hours) with a mid-week bonus
every Wednesday.
