#480 WIRED FOR SOUND Cliff Richard
By the late 70s, Cliff Richard's music had gained a more contemporary- even edgy- direction. This began with "We Don't Talk Anymore" and progressed through singles such as "Carrie", "Dreamin'" and, in 1981, the highlight: "Wired For Sound".
Celebrating the Sony Walkman, this hit song was written by Alan Tarney with B.A. Robertson. The former also produced the recording. The emergence of a portable player was a significant innovation in the enjoyment of music. The single's accompanying music video finds Richard rollerskating around adorned with headphones, listening to his Walkman. Despite having been a Top 40 fixture in Britain since 1958, he showed no signs of giving up his hold on the music scene. "Wired..." peaked at #4 in Britain. The single also reached the Top 10 in Australia (#2), New Zealand, Belgium and Ireland.
He was born Harry Webb in India in 1940. Richard pre-dates The Beatles and reached #2 with his 1st chart entry, "Move It". In 1959, he scored his 1st UK #1 with "Living Doll". Ever since, Richard has been a much-loved British musical institution. He has amassed 14 #1 singles across a record-breaking 5 consecutive decades. Now in his 70s, he still records and performs.
This
is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I
cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks.
Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have
universal appeal.
They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal
choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a
better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
2
new songs are added each day (every 12 hours) with a mid-week bonus
every Wednesday.
