#471 TAKE ON ME A-Ha
1985 saw the arrival of Norwegian pop group A-Ha. The music video for "Take On Me" was unforgettable, mixing animation with live action. The song was upbeat and filled with hooks in the instrumentation as well as the vocal by Morten Harket. It was written by all 3 members of the trio. Alan Tarney handled production. In hindsight, its success seems a no-brainer, but it was simply as a result of perseverance that the song became a worldwide hit.
The original version only charted in Norway, peaking at #3 in 1984. The group re-recorded "Take On Me" for their 'Hunting High and Low' LP. Yet again, the single failed to attract momentum. Everything changed once the American division of Warner Brothers enlisted a video clip from Steve Barron. People noticed the video. MTV added it. The clip was on high rotation and the public headed into record stores to purchase the single.
"Take On Me" reached #1 in Norway, but this time- also charted elsewhere; making #1 in other European countries, Australia and even the US. In Britain, where the group had been based for some time, the single peaked at #2.
This
is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I
cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks.
Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have
universal appeal.
They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal
choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a
better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
2
new songs are added each day (every 12 hours) with a mid-week bonus
every Wednesday.
