& pop acts since the start of the Rock Era in 1955.
To be eligible, the songs need to have been first heard in
association with a film from the last 60 years (although some exceptions do
exist where the song gained a higher profile after its use in a motion
picture)- so no songs from “West Side Story”, “Phantom of the Opera”, “Les
Miserables” or “The Sound Of Music” and other films that first started out as
stage musicals.

Pierce
Brosnan took on the role of super spy James Bond for 'GoldenEye'. U2's
Bono and The Edge wrote the title song for Tina Turner to perform.

(‘Xanadu’- 1980)
The
musical 'Xanadu' was not well received but its soundtrack album spawned
various hits; most notably the song "Magic". At the time of its
release, the track became Olivia Newton-John's biggest American hit,
reaching #1. The singer also starred in the film.

Chicago
(‘Summer Lovers’- 1982)
The
romance film 'Summer Lovers' was filmed on the Greek island of
Santorini. Chicago's power ballad reached #1 in the USA. The film may
have been forgotten in subsequent decades, but caused a stir in the
1980s when details about the plot involving the 3 principal cast members
in a threesome emerged.

Orchestral Manouvres In The Dark
(‘Pretty In Pink’- 1986)
'Pretty In Pink' was 1 of the so-called 'Brat Pack'
films. Its soundtrack boasted a very contemporary array of artists. OMD
achieved its biggest hit in the USA with "If You Leave".

Cliff Richard
(‘Summer Holiday’- 1963)
Cliff
Richard starred in the British musical film as well as performing songs
such as the title tune. "Summer Holiday" was a UK #1 single and the
film was a box office success there too.

Giorgio Moroder
(‘Midnight Express’- 1978)
An
instrumental, so not technically a song, but this exciting score became
a disco chart hit for the talented producer Giorgio Moroder. 'Midnight
Express' was a prison drama that starred Brad Davis. Moroder's music won
the Academy Award for Best Score.

The
film 'Casino Royale' may have been a spoof of the James Bond franchise,
but the gorgeous song "The Look Of Love" swiftly took on a life of its
own. With 1 of the industry's best songwriting teams (Burt Bacharach
& Hal David) crafting the classic and Dusty Springfield delivering 1
of the sultriest vocals in music history, the end result is simply
unforgettable.

Yvonne Elliman
(‘Saturday Night Fever’- 1977)
A
film dealing with the disco scene boasted 1 of the most successful
soundtrack albums ever recorded. Some older tracks were used, including
"Boogie Shoes", "A Fifth Of Beethoven" and "Disco Inferno". The
previously unreleased new songs were mostly by The Bee Gees. The trio
offered "If I Can't Have You" to Yvonne Elliman who scored a massive hit
and reached #1 in America with it.

Des'ree's
execution of the love ballad from the modern interpretation of 'Romeo +
Juliet' was a perfect fit. Her vocals evoke the innocent and pure
romance between the doomed lovers. It remains 1 of cinema's most soulful
ballads.
