-Phil Collins announces he is quitting Genesis to focus on his solo career.
-Sammy Hagar quits Van Halen.
-David Bowie releases the 1st digital single by a major record label- "Telling Lies".
-Tupac Shakur is shot and dies on Sept. 13.
-Jack Gilles marries Meg White. He takes on her surname and the 2 will go on to form The White Stripes.
-Faith Hill marries Tim McGraw.
-Madonna gives birth to her daughter Lourdes.
-The Stone roses call it quits.
-Crowded House performs its farwell concert at the Sydney Opera House.
-Eminem releases his debut studio album.
Girl power dominated the charts in 1996, with the global success of The Spice Girls. The first digital single on a major label was released by Virgin Records. Coolio scored a worldwide hit with his reworking of Stevie Wonder's song "Pastime Paradise". Debut recordings emerged from Eminem and No Doubt. The Fugees broke through with a remake of "Killing Me Softly". This was also the year of the Macarena.
