DRAG: K.D. LANG
 K.d. lang - Drag.jpg
 [1997]
K.D. Lang's voice could make the phone book sound poetic. Its rich and lush texture is irresistibly alluring. 'Drag' finds the Canadian chanteuse covering songs that are loosely all linked to smoking; the act itself, as well as themes of addiction. Lang moves effortlessly from a variety of source material. She weaves a beautiful interpretation of The Hollies' hit "The Air That I Breathe"; re-invents The Steve Miller Band's "The Joker" and skilfully executes "Theme From The Valley Of The Dolls". The best moment is Lang's performance of "Till The Heart Caves In"; written by Roy Orbison, T-Bone Burnett and Bob Neuwirth. There is humour in her reading of "Smoke Rings". It is a credit to her vocal ability that the diverse range of songs all blend so well. Any listener that fell under Lang's spell with the brilliant 'Ingenue' album will be satisfied with this collection of songs. Like an addiction, Lang proves too hard to resist. Highlight tracks: Till The Heart Caves In; Theme From Valley Of The Dolls & The Air That I Breathe.
