100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1957
💥9 Great Balls Of Fire
Jerry Lee Lewis
When Sam Phillips presented “Great Balls Of Fire” for Jerry Lee Lewis to record, the rock pioneer was concerned. Otis Blackwell’s lyrics left no doubt that the song was about nothing innocent. As time passed that day, Lewis relented. As if shaking off any fear of the Lord’s judgement, the singer attacked the song with sexual drive and energy. The track only features 2 instruments: Lewis on his piano and J.M. Van Eaton on drums. “Great Balls Of Fire” pushed rock over the line of what was taboo at the time. Echoes of Lewis’ style can be recognized in the music of acts such as Elton John, The Beatles and Bruno Mars.
