100 ESSENTIAL ELTON JOHN
DEEP CUTS
MADE IN ENGLAND {1995}
In 1994, Elton issued ‘The Lion King’ soundtrack. This project spawned new highlights for his songbook: “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” and “Circle Of Life”. The following year, he released a new studio album. All of the tracks were penned by Elton with Bernie Taupin. “Believe” was the project’s Top 20 transatlantic hit. Elton co-produced the album with Greg Penny. As the title suggests, ‘Made In England’ was recorded in London.
75 Made In England
The title track was the album’s second single, charting well only (as expected) in the UK.
76 Belfast
The London Session Orchestra takes the spotlight on this powerful track. Paul Buckmaster returns as arranger and conductor. Instruments heard during the song include accordion, violin, pipes and flutes.
77 Latitude
The legendary George Martin arranged and conducted the strings and French horn on this album track.
78 Please
The album’s mood picks up with the optimistic track “Please”. As is the case with “Belfast”, this is another song on the album that deserved greater attention. It was issued as the disc’s fourth and final single. Background vocals were performed by Elton with bandmembers Davey Johnstone, Guy Babylon and Bob Birch.
79 Lies
This upbeat track reflects a shift in the musical style of the two songwriters.
80 Blessed
Closing the album is the beautiful third single lifted off ‘Made In England’. This bookends the opening track “Believe”- another ballad.
