100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1951
💥1 Rocket 88
Jackie Brenton & His Delta Cats
Unofficially recognized as the first “rock and roll” record, the group featured Ike Turner on guitar. Essentially, this was Ike and his band, but Sam Phillips sent the track off to Chess Records and credited it to Brenton. Turner was unaware of the change. The Memphis cut celebrated the Oldsmobile Rocket 88; establishing the link between rock ‘n’ roll and cars right at its birth. Phillips used the proceeds of this single to launch his legendary Sun Records label.
