Germany participated in the inaugural presentation of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. The country had to wait a quarter century before finally securing its first victory. This was finally accomplished by the entry “Ein bißchen Frieden”. Nicole sang the winner, the first sung entirely in German. The following year, Munich hosted Eurovision.

At the time of the first German victory, the nation was divided. The Berlin Wall separated East Berlin from West Berlin. Technically, the 1982 triumph belongs to the latter territory. When Lena stormed to victory in 2010 with “Satellite”, Germany was once again a united country.

The earliest Contests consisted only of a Grand Final. With the inclusion of many more countries, Semi-Finals were introduced. As one of “the Big 5” nations and automatically proceeds into the Grand Final.
