Greece first participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974. A long wait ensued for Greek entries. The drought was finally broken with a Eurovision victory in 2005. That year, Helena Paparizou performed the triumphant entry “My Number One” in English. This remains the sole Greek winner thus far in the Contest.

Greece was the fifth consecutive country to score its first win, following Estonia, Latvia, Turkey and Ukraine. In 2006, Athens was the host city for the Eurovision Song Contest, where another nation claimed its first victory.
