100 ESSENTIAL DONNA SUMMER SONGS #2. Concludes: tomorrow.

Caffè Lattè presents…

 THE 100 ESSENTIAL SONGS BY

DONNA SUMMER

We focus on Donna Summer’s most essential recordings...

2 LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY

In 1974, Donna was an unknown outside of Germany and Holland.  Recording music in Munich with Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, the trio drew inspiration from the Serge Gainsbourg/ Jane Birkin sensuous French hit “Je T’aime… Moi Non Plus”. Donna added the moans and groans that would distinguish “Love To Love You Baby” from other tracks on the market.

When initially released in Europe, the single seemed destined to flop. Around this time, Neil Bogart had launched his label Casablanca Records. The company had Kiss and Parliament on its roster and was keen to have a hot soloist. When Bogart heard “Love To Love You Baby”, he was determined to release it in America.

As discotheques were sprouting all over the world, DJs wanted longer songs to play. Bogart asked Moroder and Bellotte to extend the song to fill one side of the ‘Love To Love You Baby’ album.

An edited version was unleashed as a single in 1975. The song became a Top 5 smash hit in America, Britain, Canada, Australia, Scandinavia and New Zealand.

The success of the single shifted Moroder’s focus from Europe and Euro-disco to the U.S.A. Donna relocated back to America where her musical career and disco music in general- began to thrive.
