As rock music mellowed in the 1970s, a wake-up call was needed to revitalise the genre. That rude awakening was punk rock. Taking rock back to the basics and drawing inspiration from the likes of The Velvet Underground, The Stooges and The New York Dolls, two epicentres emerged: New York and London. These cities spawned punk pioneers such as The Ramones and The Sex Pistols respectively. Countless bands often with little or no musical skill or experience followed in their wake.
