Devo stood out from the pack when the new wave group broke through in the late 1970s. Their fan base grew significantly, following the release of hit single "Whip It" and its music video, which soon became an MTV staple. The song was included on their 'Freedom of Choice' LP.
The single ushered in the new sounds that were to become commonplace during the Eighties. The synthesizer is used effectively. Group members Mark Motherbaugh and Gerald V. Casale co-wrote the song which charted as a single in 1980. It reached the Top 20 in America, Canada and New Zealand. In Australia, a live version of the song reached #1 in 1981, as 1 of the tracks on the 'Dev-O Live' E.P. The group continues to record and tour to this day. Casale died in February 2014.
