TOP 1200 CHOICE TRACKS

#629 YOU'RE SO VAIN Carly Simon
The subject matter of the song "You're So Vain" has remained a secret since its release in 1972. Was Carly Simon singing about her then husband James Taylor? Or Mick Jagger from The Rolling Stones, who sings backup vocals? Or was she referring to actor Warren Beatty? Was it all 3? Simon has never revealed the identity, ensuring the mystery continues.
The single was a #1 hit in the US, Australia and Canada. In Britain, it climbed to #3. Simon penned the song for her 'No Secrets' album. She plays piano on the track. Producer Richard Perry contributed percussion. Klaus Voorman, an associate of the Beatles, performed bass guitar. The strings were arranged by Simon and orchestrated by Paul Buckmaster.
In 2001, the song was sampled for a track lifted off Janet Jackson's 'All For You' album, entitled "Son of a Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You). The single - which peaked at #28 in America, 20 in Australia and 13 in Britain- renewed interest in Simon's original hit.
