the key moments of Europe’s annual competition.
1979
Israel's victory in 1978 took Eurovision beyond the borders of Europe. Jerusalem played host in 1979. Turkey gave in to pressure from some Arab nations and boycotted the ESC.
Eurovision went ahead with 19 competing countries. By the time the Spanish jury scores were announced (the last for the night), Spain's song was in the lead. Israel was given 10 points by the Spanish jury and pushed "Hallelujah" ahead to victory.
The win was Israel's 2nd consecutive victory. Israeli TV declined to host Eurovision again in 1980. The ESC would be held in The Hague, The Netherlands.
