🔲 Gordy dared to dream of a label that would be a force on the chart owned by a black man. With Motown and its subsidiary labels, he not only achieved his goal, but changed popular music forever. He gathered an enviable roster for his company, including Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, The Four Tops, The Jackson 5 and Stevie Wonder. Motown kept American and R&B acts at the top of the charts throughout the 1960s. This continued across subsequent decades with acts such as The Commodores, Rick James, Diana Ross and Boyz II Men. Gordy gained experience while producing hit singles such as “Shop Around” (Motown’s first major chart success), "Fingertips", “Love Child” and “I Want You Back”.
