ALL THE WINNING COUNTRIES
A look back at every country that has won the Eurovision Song Contest in chronological order.
1956
SWITZERLAND
Although steeped in mystery, the first country to be declared a winner was Switzerland. There is no record of how the participating nations voted but at the inaugural presentation held in the Swiss city of Lugano, Lys Assia emerged victorious with “Refrain”.
Switzerland had to wait until 1988 to claim the top prize again. That year, “Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi” won. The song was performed by Celine Dion, who was still unknown to most of the world at the time.
