ALL THE WINNING COUNTRIES
A look back at every country that has won the Eurovision Song Contest in chronological order.
1964
ITALY
Denmark’s first Eurovision win in 1963 was followed by an Italian triumph the next year. The idea of a European contest was suggested by Italy and based on its annual Sanremo Music Festival. It was one of the 7 nations that competed at the inaugural ESC in 1956. Gigliola Cinquetti performed the successful Italian entry “Non ho l’età” in 1964.
Italy had to wait until 1990 to win again, doing so with Toto Cutugno’s “Insieme: 1992”. In 1998, the country ceased participating in the Contest. This boycott continued until 2011. Italy became the last of the “Big 5” countries that pre-qualify for the Grand Final each year at that time.
After coming close a few times in recent years, Italy finally secured its third win in 2021. Måneskin secured the prize with the entry “Zitti e buoni”.This victory means the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Italy. Turin was selected as the host city for this coming May.
