1000 Australian Number Ones
Caffe` Latte` looks back on each set of 100 chart topping singles, beginning in 1940 to 2013.
Part 8: 701- 800 (1992 - 2000)

The last years of the 20th century saw the music industry deal with dwindling singles sales and the continued expansion of the internet as a tool for music piracy and file sharing.

Amongst all this tumultuous change, some innovative acts reach the chart summit. Bobby Brown took new jack swing to the top with "Humpin' Around". Snow rapped his way to #1 with "Informer". Sweden's Ace of Base made number one twice. Boyz II Men returned harmony vocal groups to the top, followed by All -4- One. Grunge gained mainstream popularity via No. 1s by Silverchair. and Pearl Jam. Boy bands were represented by the likes of East 17, *NSYNC, and Take That. Females were reaching the top too, with groups like TLC, All Saints, Destiny's Child, B*Witched and the Spice Girls. Shaggy exposed mainstream audiences to dancehall. Country pop was revived by Shania Twain.

The 1992 Barcelona Olympics spawned a #1 hit duet for Jose Carreras & Sarah Brightman. Princess Diana's sudden death 5 years later resulted in a #1 for Puff Daddy and a global tribute hit by Elton John.

Janet became the second member of the Jackson clan to make the top.  Will Smith reached #1 as part of the duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince and later as a soloist. Oasis reignited Brit-pop with their Beatlesque sound; while metal fans devoured hits by Metallica. Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez started their string of chart topping songs in 1999.

Celine Dion made #1 for the first time with "The Power of Love". Canada was also dominating the top spot courtesy of Bryan Adams, Jann Arden and Crash Test Dummies.
Australian acts also reigned over our pop charts with #1s from Killing Heidi, Merril Bainbridge and Savage Garden.

Movie hits included Whitney Houston's uber- ballad from 'The Bodyguard', "I Will Always Love You"; "Love is all Around" from '4 Weddings and a Funeral' and Seal's "Kiss from a Rose" from the Batman franchise. Aerosmith returned to the top, with a song from 'Armageddon'. The box office champ, 'Titanic', saw Celine Dion top the charts here with "My Heart Will Go On".

Acts finally reaching the peak included Meat Loaf and Mariah Carey.

1000 Australian Number Ones
Caffe` Latte` looks back on each set of 100 chart topping singles, beginning in 1940 to 2013.
Part 7: 601- 700 (1985 - 92)

During this period, the drop in vinyl sales eventually led to its replacement with cassingles and compact discs. Music videos were an essential tool for massive record sales. Among the new video-savvy acts in this next 100 chart toppers were: A-Ha, Paula Abdul, New Kids on the Block, Jon Bon Jovi, Robert Palmer, the B-52s, Sinead O'Connor and Whitney Houston.

Australian acts which enjoyed a reign at the top included Midnight Oil, Euphoria, the Divinyls, Ratcat, Pseudo Echo and Kylie Minogue. The latter successfully made the transition tfrom TV soap star to pop idol; first in the UK and Australia and then beyond. Cold Chisel may not have enjoyed a #1 as a group, but 2 of its former members (Jimmy Barnes and Ian Moss) scored solo chart toppers.
Jennifer Rush took her original version of "Power of Love" to #1 in 1985.
Some veteran acts that finally made the top spot included Cher, Starship, Dionne Warwick, Heart, Bette Midler, Aerosmith, Gladys Knight, Cliff Richard and Aretha Franklin. U2 also reached the summit for the first time, as did: Phil Collins, Simply Red, Billy Ocean and the Fine Young Cannibals.

Stock, Aiken & Waterman led a Top 40 siege, producing chart toppers for the likes of Kylie Minogue, Mel and Kim, Rick Astley and Bananarama.
Sweden produced another dominating group: Roxette, following the record-breaking sales of ABBA in the previous decade.
Bobby McFerrin returned a capella to the top with his novelty hit "Don't Worry, Be Happy".
Some chart toppers enjoyed a return to the top following a lengthy absence, including John Farnham, George Harrison, the Beach Boys, Skyhooks, Daryl Braithwaite and Louis Armstrong.
The music of 'Grease' experienced a revival and led to a renewed reign in the shape of the 'Grease Megamix'.
Rap finally gained acceptance with visits to the top by MC Hammer, Kriss Kross, Salt 'n Pepa, Vanilla Ice and Young MC.
Deee-Lite, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Faith No More took their unique sounds to the chart peak.
Bryan Adams' first Australian #1- from the new Robin Hood movie-  in Australia ruled our charts for 11 weeks.
As a group, the Beatles dominated the chart summit throughout the 1960s. In the decade which followed, each member returned to #1 in their own right. In 1992, John Lennon's son Julian also checked in at the top.
