SWEDEN

ABBA - Waterloo (Original Polar LP).jpg

Few countries take Eurovision as seriously as Sweden does. This is reflected in its annual national selections named Melodifestivalen which premiered in 1959. Sweden joined the Eurovision family in 1958. The nation has only missed 3 Contests since its debut. To date, only Ireland has accumulated more ESC victories. Sweden is currently in second place after securing 6 wins at Eurovision. Its first victorious entry remains arguably the most famous ESC song: “Waterloo”. This triumphant classic launched one of popular music’s best-selling acts: ABBA. In 1974, the group was not a favourite to win. That year in Brighton, England, Olivia Newton-John- with home-grown advantage -was tipped to claim the main prize. ABBA’s win was a watershed moment in the Contest’s history.

Sweden scored its second victory in 1984 with “Diggi-Loo Diggi-Ley” performed by The Herreys. In 1991, Carola claimed the nation’s third successful entry with “Fångad av en stormvind”. Charlotte Nilsson secured a fourth Swedish triumph with “Take Me To Your Heaven” in 1999.

Sweden prevailed again in 2012 with Loreen’s popular entry “Euphoria”. Three years later, Måns Zelmerlöw gave the country its most recent and sixth winning song: “Heroes”. Another successful entry would see Sweden tie with Ireland for the most Eurovision wins. This year the country will be represented by “Hold Me Closer” and performed by Cornelia Jakobs and is regarded as a strong contender.

Séverine - Un banc, un arbre, une rue.jpg

Monaco joined the Eurovision family in 1959. Its only win thus far was with the French song “Un banc, un arbre, une rue”. Severine performed the entry. After the 1979 Contest, Monaco began a 25-year absence which ended in 2004. This return was short-lived.

For 3 years, Monaco failed to qualify for the Grand Final. It competed for the last time in 2006. There is speculation that Monaco may return to Eurovision in the near future.

IRELAND

Dana - All Kinds of Everything.jpg

When Ireland first competed in the 1965 edition of Eurovision, few would have expected it to become the Contest’s most successful participant. Dana’s performance of “All Kinds Of Everything” claimed the prize and the first Irish victory.

The next chapter of Ireland at the ESC began with Johnny Logan’s entry “What’s Another Year” the winning entry in 1980. He returned 7 years later with the power ballad “Hold Me Now”, which made the Australian born singer the first performer to win a second time. Logan penned that entry and the 1992 winner “Why Me”, which was performed by Linda Martin.

Ireland’s domination at Eurovision continued breaking records. Its 1993 entry “In Your Eyes” by Niamh Kavanagh gave the nation back-to-back wins. Incredibly, the 1994 entry “Rock ‘N’ Roll Kids” performed by Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan saw Ireland secure the first third consecutive win. With the 1996 Irish entry “The Voice” sung by Eimear Quinn, the country became Eurovision’s most successful competitor. Ireland had won 4 of the last 5 Contests.

The nation remains in front with its 7 Eurovision victories. Ireland has struggled since, especially with the rule changes that had previously worked in favour of its English-language entries. Sweden is its nearest rival, with 6 ESC wins to date.
