The Everly Brothers

The Everly Brothers were already influential with their hit singles in the late 1950s. They mixed country with rock, wrapped around two-part harmonies on classics such as “Bye Bye Love”, “Wake Up Little Susie” and “All I Have To Do Is Dream”. These gems were issued on Cadence. The brothers then signed with Warner Brothers. With their place in rock history already assured, Don and Phil Everly continued to evolve as singer/ songwriter/ musicians. One of the duo’s first hits on Warner was “Cathy’s Clown”. This was a new benchmark for the brothers. Piano was added to the traditional guitar-driven sound of the Cadence hits. The production was innovative. Structurally too, the song was different. The cherry on top were those descending harmony vocals. No wonder this became the duo’s most successful single. The siblings influenced the likes of The Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel.
