THE 50 MOST ESSENTIAL MOVIE SOUNDTRACKS. Today: #13. More: tomorrow.

Caffè Lattè presents:

THE MOST ESSENTIAL

MOVIE SOUNDTRACKS

For decades, songs and movies have been matched. The most successful are effective tools, cross-promoting both the music and the film in which they are featured; giving one or both longevity. Here are 50 Motion Picture Soundtrack Albums that evoke memories of the films they appeared in. The criteria was to include only movie soundtracks which consisted largely of new material, rather than a compilation of older songs or remakes.

F AME

1980

This musical made a star of Irene Cara. She provides the LP with 3 of its standout numbers: “Out Here On My Own”, the Academy Award-winning title song and (with the ensemble) “I Sing The Body Electric”. Paul McCrane’s moving “Is It Okay If I Call You Mine?” is another highlight. ‘Fame’ was a major success at the box office. It spawned a TV series, stage musical and was remade in 2009.

C AN’T STOP THE MUSIC

1980

The bulk of the songs on this soundtrack were recorded by The Village People and The Ritchie Family. Both acts appear as part of the cast. Among the highlights are: the title track, “Milkshake” and “Magic Night”. Also added to the LP was The Village People’s signature anthem “Y.M.C.A.”. Although the film's plot leaves a lot to be desired, its soundtrack does contain many fun elements.

L ET IT BE

1970

The ‘Let It Be’ documentary was unleashed in the same year that The Beatles announced it was breaking up. Although the album was recorded prior to ‘Abbey Road’, it was issued after it. The LP captures John, Paul, George and Ringo during the period where the Fab Four was splintering. It therefore served as an unexpected swansong for the band.

 HONOURABLE MENTIONS

These soundtracks did not fit the criteria, but are definitely worth highlighting as exceptional tie-ins to films.

GOOD MORNING VIETNAM

1987

In between the musical tracks are excerpts performed by Robin Williams who starred in the war comedy-drama. The songs were oldies that included “Nowhere To Run”(Martha & The Vandellas), “I Got You (I Feel Good)” (James Brown) and “I Get Around” (The Beach Boys). It was this box office hit film that resurrected “What A Wonderful World” and returned Louis Armstrong to the top of the charts.

THE COMMITMENTS

1991

Alan Parker directed this film which revolves around a soul band named The Commitments in Dublin, Ireland. Andrew Strong acts and performs most of the lead vocals on the soundtrack, filled with covers of R&B classics such as “Mustang Sally”, “The Dark End Of The Street”, “Try A Little Tenderness”, “Destination Anywhere” and “In The Midnight Hour”. A beautiful film with a magical playlist, the LP was particularly successful in Australia where it reached #2. Volume 2 was issued in 1992 and peaked at #3 on the same chart.
