SHIRLEY BASSEY
Shirley Bassey was born in 1937 in Cardiff, Wales to a Nigerian father and English mother. She broke through as a singer in the mid-50s. Her profile was raised further in 1964 when she recorded the title song for the James Bond film 'Goldfinger'. She would record 2 more for the 007 franchise: "Diamonds Are Forever" in 1972 and "Moonraker" 7 years later.
Among her other signature songs are "Big Spender", "Never, Never, Never", "Disco La Passione" (with Chris Rea) and "History Repeating". She was made a Dame in 2000. Bassey continues performing and recording to this day.

LITHUANIA
WHEN WE’RE OLD
Ieva Zasimauskaite
Lithuania first appeared at Eurovision in 1994. Its best result so far is the #6 placing earned in 2006. Ieva Zasimauskaite will have to work hard to make the ballad "When We're Old"stand out during Semi-Final 1. While the song is pleasant, a lot will rest on her performance. It could improve with repeated listens.

STAN
 “…Come to think about it,
his name was...
it was you.
Damn!
Eminem's "Stan" has 2 protagonists: himself as Slim Shady and an obsessed fan named Stan. The 2 correspond via letters. By the song's end, the rapper realizes that the fan has killed his pregnant girlfriend and himself.
It is a disturbing and violent song. The plot twists and builds to its shocking conclusion. Eminem co-wrote it with Paul Herman and includes a sample of Dido's "Thank You".  The track was included on his 2000 album 'The Marshall Mathers LP'.

TABOO
Christabelle
Malta first participated at Eurovision in 1971 and has yet to taste victory. The nation has come close: finishing 2nd in 2002 and 2005. This year, Christabelle will perform "Taboo" which is a good song, but lacks any memorable impact. With a strong delivery, the song could make it to the Grand Final from the Second Semi.

THE SOUND OF SILENCE
 “…People talking
without speaking,
people hearing
without listening
Paul Simon penned "The Sound Of Silence" (aka "The Sounds Of Silence") for the 1964 album 'Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.'. The acoustic folk rock song was re-recorded as the title track for a Simon & Garfunkel album issued 2 years later.
Its lyrics describe the state of society at the time. It deals with the shallow and sterile relations between individuals. The verses still resonate to this day.

RUSSIA
I WON’T BREAK
Julia Samoylova
Russia returns to Eurovision this year after it withdrew in 2017. Julia Samoylova had also been selected to represent the mighty nation last year. Unfortunately, her 2018 entry "I Won't Break" is not as good as "Flame Is Burning".
Despite its weaker song, Russia is a safe bet to progress from Semi-Final 2 and into the Grand Final. This is a far cry from the breathtaking (and best of 2016) presentation of "You Are The Only One". Russia first participated at Eurovision in 1994 and won in 2008.
